Shooting Handbags Ad Campaign

I recently shot another advertising campaign, this time a handbags ad campaign. How did I shoot it? Keep reading to learn how.

I’d like to share with you how I shot my most recent advertising campaign because it may help you in your next shoot. So let’s break down the requirements, finding a location, the gear used and the people involved.

Background/Requirements

Mery Penilla and Margarita González asked me to shoot an ad campaign for their latest collaboration. Mery’s business (Studio M Penilla) offers CNC Laser-cut decoration pieces, while Margarita’s (Maggieblue Weaving) offers hand woven products. They got together to design and produce a collection of handbags, made using both techniques.

When we sat down to work out the requirements, they showed me the products and explained that the images should be shot during the day, in an urban setting, with a model. The model should wear neutral colors in order for the handbags to pop.

Location

The handbags are for casual use and very urban, so we should shoot the photographs during the day. We chose to use on a Saturday morning, in the downtown area of our hometown.

Gear

The gear selection was simple. The main camera was my Fujifilm X-T2, with the XF35mmF1.4 R and XF56mmF1.2 R

I decided to go with only one Godox TT685, which would be inside a 90x60cm (36×24 in) softbox. I used the Godox X1T to control the flash. The X1T has been discontinued, but you can also use an XPro transmitter.

The Shoot

We shot on a Saturday morning, everybody arrived on time and ready, so we got going pretty fast. Most of the time I shot at ISO 100, 1/250 s and with the flash firing at ⅛ power. I then changed the aperture according to the environment light and conditions, between f/1.4 and f/2.8. These settings allowed me to balance ambient light with flash.

I added an ND filter in some of the last shots, because the environment light was very bright and I didn’t want to use HSS.

Team

Of course, I didn’t work alone in this production:
