Why I Left Canon (And What I Switched To)

I shot with Canon cameras for more than 15 years but I recently switched systems. Find out why I left Canon and how I’m doing so far.

After posting my last video I received a few questions regarding my gear, because I showed my Canon EOS M3 on the video, but the video quality was better than if I had shot with my iPhone. So, what did I shoot that video with?

The Reveal

A Fujifilm X-T2, of course! 🙂 I jumped in to the mirrorless world with the X-T2 and two lenses: XF56mmF1.2 R and XF10-24mmF4 R OIS.

I’ve been interested in mirrorless systems for a long time, ever since the first Micro 4/3 cameras launched and brought with them the advantages of smaller and lighter cameras, paired with great image quality. I also realized last year how, even though I loved the images that I produced with the Canon 5D Mk III, carrying it around had become a bit of a chore so I needed something lighter.

When my gear was stolen, the opportunity for a switch was clear, so I just jumped and got myself the camera/system that had the best balance of image quality and cost.

First Impressions

So far, I’ve had a blast with it, shooting both portraits and architecture in very much the same way I used to with the 5D, but hauling a way lighter piece of gear.

The only weak points that I see are:

• the flash system, which is in its infancy but there is hope with a 3rd party vendor
• battery life, which is a real pain if you only work with the camera battery and not the grip
